Chapter 50: Stars All Pale in Comparison
by reimuLeon took the future scientist to Rosvitha’s library.
After their relationship improved, she had given Leon keys to access most rooms in the Silver Dragon Temple.
This naturally included her private library.
Opening the library door, rows of neat bookshelves came into view, and the elegant, simple decor added to the scholarly atmosphere.
As soon as they entered, Little Light’s eyes widened in surprise. She excitedly clenched her little fists, and even her tail lifted slightly. Those pink pupils sparkled with anticipation and longing for books and knowledge.
This was her first time in Rosvitha’s library, so such excitement was expected.
Leon patted Little Light’s head,
“How is it?”
“Super awesome!”
Leon smiled, “Noia studied here for a while before, and this is also where Muen received her magic enlightenment. If Little Light wants to learn more knowledge, the books here can fully satisfy your needs.”
The collection in Rosvitha’s library could satisfy even an ultimate overachiever like Noia, let alone Little Light, who was just starting out.
Leon patted Little Light’s back, “Go on, pick a few books you’re interested in. Daddy will wait for you at the desk by the floor-to-ceiling window.”
“Okay~”
Little Light eagerly ran between the rows of bookshelves, selecting books she liked.
Leon went to the spot where he used to accompany Noia and Muen during their studies and waited quietly.
After about ten minutes, Little Light came over carrying a stack of books higher than her head, swaying as she walked.
Her tail swung behind her, struggling to maintain balance.
Leon shook his head with a smile, then went forward to take the books from Little Light’s arms.
“Taking so many, can you finish them?”
“Daddy, you don’t understand, books are the ladder of children’s progress.”
Leon was taken aback.
He had heard this famous saying before, but wasn’t the original “books are the ladder of human progress”?
Hiss~
Could it be that the human blood in his little daughter, the half that belonged to Leon, was beginning to awaken?
No wonder compared to other young dragons, Little Light was quieter and showed more interest in books. Was this the reason?
Good, good, good, darling, you’re really making daddy proud!
However, before Leon could get too pleased with himself, he realized things weren’t quite as he imagined.
He watched as Little Light took the books from his arms one by one, then placed them on the chair beside the desk, stacking them layer by layer.
Finally, she climbed up and sat on the ‘mountain of books,’ the height just right for her to lean over the desk and read.
“See, daddy, a ladder of progress!” Little Light proudly patted the books beneath her bottom.
So “books are the ladder of children’s progress” meant this – adults indeed don’t need to put several books under their bottoms when reading at a desk.
While admiring his little daughter’s cleverness, the flame of hope that had just ignited in Leon’s heart was also extinguished by a bucket of cold water.
Human genes, wake up! Show some effect, human genes!
The old father walked over and sat across from his little daughter. “Sweetheart, that’s not a ladder of progress, that’s a progress cushion.”
“‘Ladder’ sounds more literary,” Little Light said with complete seriousness.
Leon smiled and looked at the few books that Little Light hadn’t used as cushions. “What books did you pick?”
“‘A Brief History of Dragons’, ‘The Hypothesis of Magic Origins’, ‘From Void to Starry Sky’ and…”
As she spoke, Little Light held up the book in her hands.
When Leon saw the title on the book’s cover, he paused for a moment and couldn’t help reading it aloud,
“‘The History of Human Arts’?”
Little Light nodded obediently, “Mm-hmm!”
The flame of hope had died too soon.
This time it was truly a victory for the human genes!
However, amid his joy, another question popped up:
Why did Rosvitha’s library have books about humans?
When he was here before studying with Noia and Muen, there hadn’t been a single book about humans.
Could it have been added afterwards?
Was it the dragoness’s own decision?
He couldn’t guess.
But regardless, it was a good thing that his little daughter was interested in human culture.
How should he put this?
The prenatal education plan was a complete success!
It wasn’t in vain that I, as your father, frantically recited poetry and sang songs to your mother’s pregnant belly – the effects of prenatal education are showing now, aren’t they?
Leon held back his laughter and returned from his thoughts. “Alright, take your time reading. If there’s anything you don’t understand, just ask dad.”
“Okay~”
Little Light opened “The History of Human Art” and began reading carefully.
With nothing else to do, Leon picked up “A Brief History of Dragon Clans” from the table and began casually browsing.
In the table of contents, the author had divided the various dragon clans and dedicated separate chapters to discuss each clan’s historical development.
After skimming through two chapters, Leon discovered that this author had some skill.
Although the history was told in a “fragmented” way, each “fragment” contained key points that connected with other “fragments.”
Moreover, the order in which the dragon clans appeared in the book was very well-considered, emphasizing continuity and proper structure.
So even though it was “fragmented” narration, it read very smoothly without feeling disjointed.
Leon found the Silver Dragon clan in the contents.
The Silver Dragon clan appeared relatively late, showing up in the latter half of the book.
In other words, Rosvitha’s race was also a newly emerged clan from the past thousand years?
“Taking advantage of their naturally favorable geographical position, the Silver Dragon clan established their place among dragonkind as soon as they emerged.”
“The most notable characteristic of Silver Dragon territory is that it’s easy to defend but difficult to attack. Because of this, Silver Dragon kings throughout generations have been more conflict-averse compared to other clan’s dragon kings, never initiating conflicts with any race.”
The saying that the environment shapes its people makes sense.
Living in such a naturally blessed place with abundant resources, the Silver Dragon clan indeed didn’t need to go around conquering territories and expanding their domain like Constantine.
Leon read on and quickly reached the part where the female protagonist appears:
“The fourth Silver Dragon King, Rosvitha Melkvi, ascended to the throne in Creation Year 1680. During her forty years in power (this book was written in Creation Year 1720), the Silver Dragon clan greatly developed their trade and economic systems, bringing new vitality to the Silver Dragon clan once again.”
“Before becoming king, Melkvi underwent nearly a hundred years of learning and tempering, ultimately perfectly completing the third Silver Dragon King’s academic tests and directly defeating the third generation king in combat, gaining the support of all Silver Dragon citizens.”
“The current headmistress of Saint Hiss Academy and absolutely authoritative five-star elder ‘Angelina Orlette’ once evaluated her student this way:”
“Among all children who love learning, Melkvi was the one who impressed me the most.”
“She was focused yet agile, always the most dazzling presence in any crowd, making even the stars dim before her. Her devotion to academics and power made her the most excellent Silver Dragon king in a thousand years.”
“Rosvitha Melkvi, the pride of our Saint Hiss Academy, the pride of dragonkind!”
Leon’s eye twitched slightly.
That’s… quite some intense praise…
Vice Principal Wilson, that old dragon B, was a shipper of him and Rosvitha;
And now with you, Headmistress, you’ve become Rosvitha’s dedicated fan?
So Saint Hiss Academy isn’t really a school at all, is it?
You’re just a large fan club!
And if your most excellent student Melkvi is already the pride of the academy, then why did her daughter still have to take some dramatic test when enrolling?
Couldn’t you have pulled some strings?
The last dragon-related academy was called Cassell, and their honorary alumni’s son not only got in through connections but was even rated S-class… (just kidding)
After internally complaining for a bit, Leon looked up at Little Light across from him.
His good daughter was reading seriously, lightly biting her lower lip with slightly furrowed brows – the look of deep concentration.
Leon didn’t disturb her and lowered his head to continue reading the various praises Rosvitha’s dedicated fan had for her.
Though it was cringeworthy, the current Leon actually liked this kind of cringe.
Praise her well, love to praise, praise more.
Because that’s my wife.
